The Booming City

If you are relaxing in Agoro then you must grab a Gari or Bajaj (local taxis) to go downtown. Adigrat is the capital city of Eastern Tigray and the second largest town in the region, with a pivotal junction of the roads to Axum, Mekelle and Asmara, the capital of Eritrea. Adigrat is currently booming thanks to the construction of the University and the many diverse facilities that make this city bloom again.

In Adigrat you can visit the Chirkos church that lies in the center of the town, whose interior is covered in fine 19th century paintings der pearl-index | ohnerezeptfreikauf depicting angels; the Holy Savior Catholic Cathedral that dominates the skyline of Adigrat; or the Italian war Cemetery, 4 Km East of the town commemorating around 765 Italian soldiers, many of them “caduti ignoti” (the unknown soldiers) that passed away during the last invasion in the war of 1935-38.

However, if what you want is to relax we propose a stroll from the Catholic Cathedral to piazza stopping at one of the numerous cafes to try a delicious juice or ice cream and then walk downtown mingling with the town’s youth, stop to eat a samosa and enjoy the evening drinking one of the tasty local beers (Saint George or Giorgis, Castle, Dashen, etc.). Finally, if you are here on Monday be sure not to miss the local market where you can buy from a sheep (might be difficult to take it back home) to drums made from cans or any of the local clothes or crafts.
